interview - art nouveau magazine

Check out my interview with Spencer Higgs for Art Nouveau magazine.

It was a lot of fun, here is a little excerpt:

"There’s a good chance that as you read this Zofia Bogusz is in the sweet reverie of her artistic mental zone, six hours deep into today’s meticulous process of painting beautiful woman, raging seas, cute bunnies, and macabre fish bones onto a single canvass of hand-cut natural wood. No ordinary canvass, mind you. Zofia doesn’t use ordinary canvasses; they’re too boring. The tenacious chaos of New York City growls away outside her window, but she’s unfazed, not distracted by anything except maybe the call of some fish tacos. Or maybe she’s surfing."

By the way, my solo show "sink with me" was amazing! I will post pics from it soon, I have over 200 raw image files to go through, I'll choose the best ones to show you. ;)

Press Release:
Chelsea Eye Art Gallery is pleased to present “Sink With Me”, a solo exhibition of new work by Zofia Bogusz. Please join us Wednesday September 19, from 6-8pm. , for the exhibition opening and to meet with the artist.
In the exhibition, Zofia Bogusz presents a series of paintings based around the artist’s relationship with the ocean. It’s the (symbolic) idea of becoming tranquil in the uncontrollable, dominating power of this immense body of water. It’s about letting go of sadness and fear.

Each painting features a highly rendered female figure, asserting her individual strengths against vivid backgrounds and elements. The imagery varies from playful to nautical offering a glimpse into a unique reality. The mediums used are oil paint, graphite and colored pencils on hand-cut wood. Prints of the work will also be available for sale during the opening reception.

Zofia Bogusz, a Poland native, is a New York City based artist. She received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, and currently exhibits her work nationally. Zofia has had the honor to show her work at the Jazz for Peace art and music benefit at the New York Historical Society.

Via Hi-Fructose: “Though scientific discoveries and technology shape our perception and beliefs, Western society’s classical foundations have survived well into the Internet era. Archetypes from Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian mythology influence the kinds of stories we tell about ourselves and each other — both in interpersonal interactions and in the media. On July 14, Modern Eden in San Francisco will open “Myth,” an international group show at allows a diverse line-up of artists to interpret the myths of their choice. From Persephone to King Midas, both obscure and familiar mythological characters will be stylized according to each artist’s imagination.” Written by Nastia Voynovskaya

wood...

This has to be the most beautiful wood I have ever worked on, I just can't get over it!

(and below are the beginnings of the drawing/painting)

6.04.2012

school of fish tacos

I just finished a new painting called "school of fish tacos". I have used the fish taco theme in a previous painting "the republic" and wanted to expand on it a little more (as fish tacos are delicious!).

Also, it's my first horizontal painting in a while, I have missed that format, I think I should do more of them as well as go back to custom shaped pieces as well.

oil and pencils on wood, 20in x 32in

a close-up

Below is the beginning of the painting. I actually liked the drawing as it was, with loose pencil strokes, so I kept that feel in the fish with the pencil marks coming through. The paint was just used to add vibrant color. That is my favorite way of working, using a combination of pencil and paint.

I had a lot of fun working on this piece, I think I want to expand on this theme even more.

amphibious in progress

I started working on my last panel of the sort of triptych and here are some progress shots. I am happy with how its coming out and with the painting confidence I've gained as I paint more and more.

4.23.2012

the more the better

Within my new "sea salt" series I am working on three square panel paintings with a unifying color palette and theme (I guess I can call it a triptych?) I just finished my second piece.

"off the boat" (left) and "pisces" (right). There will be one more panel in the middle...

sea salt series

So I decided that the new paintings will be part of a new series "sea salt". I have 2 pieces finished and have started on my 3rd one. I have gotten a lot faster at painting which is definitely a plus, as there are many ideas I'd like to realize into paintings.

Here is a studio shot:

spring things

Spring in NYC is actually on time this year! I have started working on a new painting, although I have 5% more work on the previous one... I will blame this procrastination on spring fever.

Anyway, so I was thinking of starting a whole new series, I already have a few painting ideas lined up. The unifying theme will be water.

I went wood shopping (my favorite) and got a new wood panels. I got maple (which I have been using for a while) and I also got some beautiful birch, which has a distinct grain, it's darker and more "moody" than maple. This will definitely have some impact on my new paintings as I like letting the wood grain lend itself into my subject matter. I can't wait to start painting on them!

Here are some recent pics from my life:

On a slightly related side note, I recently competed in my first ever swim meet. It was great, I had an amazing time, and I did pretty good for a rookie. Needless to say, my body needed a few days to recover.
