Here is something new I am working on. I'm using gold paint for the gold necklace. Metallics can be tricky because of the way they reflect light.

I took the pics from different angles (therefore different light casts) and with some help from Instagram. :)

Here you can see the paint is still wet in the face and hair, but the necklace stands out.

I think this is the deepest & purest blue I have used so far in any of my paintings.

In Poland there was a children's cartoon about a little bee named Maya. That's partially the inspiration for this piece, and the fact that I love honey. I use it a lot in cooking along with cayenne pepper. Sweet and spicy!

It's the last day of 2011 and I am feeling pretty content with my accomplishments this year, both personal and professional. I had a chance to see my family here and oversees more than ever which is what I really needed. I exhibited my art a lot this year and was more proactive about promoting it. I made some good sales and completed fun commissions. On top of that my summer was delicious!

For 2012, I plan to do it all over again and twice as much. As my fortune cookie (above) says "Planning is the prelude to successful action."

Below are some last day updates wrapping up my year:

Jarritos Art Contest: 2nd place winner

Remember how a few months ago one of my paintings won 2nd place in the Jarritos Flavor City design contest? (if not, here is the blog post to refresh your memory)

Well the prize came! Consisting of 192 bottle of Jarritos! In theory it is a half a year supply of the liquid deliciousness, but in reality, I honestly don't think it will last that long. Party anyone?

The soda goes great with tequila. :D

"Against all odds"

Here is a commission I am working on, that will be showing on January 21st in Soho, NY (I will keep you updated as we get closer to the date).

The concept is "against all odds" all the visual elements were under the direction of the client. The theme in this piece is different than my regular work, and I am enjoying working on it. (I used a color filter on the photo, in reality the painting has warm brown tones.)

The woman and rabbits (which are both hunted by men) are alive and empowered...the rabbits aren't just sitting cooking, they are swimming, and the woman isn't going to drown, she's got her goggles and a self-assured look. They might be caught in the stew but they're not giving in. The potatoes too...they're raw, not ready to be eaten. Looks like the challenge isn't over for the hunter."

I have minis of "the republic"! They are decoupage prints on wood, handmade and hangable. I will have them available for sale at the Digable Arts Festival this weekend in Hoboken, NJ. Now I have to decide whether to play around with the water some more and if the woman needs a glaze of oil paint. I have also started on a new painting called "tea time"and it's a lot smaller in size, and will also feature a fuzzy critter alongside liquids.

I finished the drawing phase of "rabbit stew" and started painting it. The first thing to get "oiled" was the water, and so far I did two layers of it. I think it's up to a point where I am content with it, I will see whether it needs more work once I paint the rabbits. Check it out!

This is the painting in its most recent stage. The water here got a second layer of oil paint, where I added more light colors and yellows and enhanced some of the highlights.

I am really enjoying her face, and therefore keep taking pics of it. The woman received soft oil glazes as well, which helped bring out her skin tones, and added richness to the colored pencils.

On another note, I have a bunch of art shows coming up during October and November, I think five... so stay tuned! The first exhibition I will be participating in is the Digable Arts Festival. It's a two day event in Hoboken, NJ on Oct. 15 & 16. I did last year, and it was pretty awesome, so I am excited for this year's. For the first time I will have mini prints of "the republic", and perhaps "mango and piña". I might also showcase the finished original "rabbit stew"! :)

rabbit stew

I started working on a new painting called "rabbit stew". It measures 32in x 32in. I initially wanted to crank out some smaller pieces, but this perfectly square piece of wood was begging me to draw and paint something on it. So here you go, these are the beginnings of what's cooking! (no rabbits will be harmed, I promise).

I have a few paintings lined up. I can't wait to finish this piece in order to get to the next one! This is good, as productivity keeps a nice flow going. So in the next couple of weeks you can expect to see in my artwork some bunnies, potatoes, lollipops, ladies, and perhaps a few other things. :)

I won 2nd place in the Jarritos Flavor City Art Contest!

My painting “mango and piña” will be featured in the VIP event, promoted on the Jarritos website, and I get a 6 month (180 bottles) supply of Jarritos.

I did a painting for the Jarritos Flavor City design contest. Jarritos is a Mexican soda brand, with delicious flavors. I had so much fun working on this piece, except the only problem with painting Jarritos is that you get really thirsty....

The contest guidelines stated that you needed to include the Jarritos logo as well as at least one of their bottles. I chose to paint the flavors 'pineapple' and 'mango' because not only are they yummy, but also because I love working with yellow and orange.

Here are some of the photos from the Contrast Art Show that took place a week ago at 320 Studios in Manhattan. I sold prints from my set-up as well as from the auction. Thank you and congrats to the new owners. For the first time there was a fashion show presented by Geary Marcello who will be showing his Foxxy Face Clubwear at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week in NYC this upcoming September.

I presented my newest painting "the republic". It is oil, colored pencils, graphite, and acrylic on wood, measuring 31in x 41in. To the left of the painting I had my prints for sale.

Often I get asked about my inspirations, about what inspires to me to make the paintings that I do. There is never just one element that make me tick creatively, but I have to say that water is a big one.
Here are some photos of me surfing in New York. Although I am not yet the poster child for Roxy, I love this sport as it is one of the more difficult ones and the most rewarding.

I went out two times that beautiful day, in the morning and then a little later in the afternoon after my chickpea salad breakfast and some sunbathing. The first time I was on my board (6'10", pictured above) and the second time a fellow ocean lover let me borrow their longboard (8', pictured in the "action" pics).

Then in the evening I did some Power Vinyassa yoga. I call that a fulfilling day!

It is done! Well, almost. Please excuse the really crappy photo quality (the painting looks a lot better in person with richer colors). I just have to put in some tiny details, such as nail color, etc. Then I can varnish it, which will bring out all the colors that have dried matte. Lastly I will have to scan it, although I am seriously dreading this as the painting is 31in x 41in and the scanner bed is 8.5in x 11in. Wish me patience!

Hello! I have been in the studio making more prints of my work. The pieces are decoupage prints on hand-cut wood, and are literally miniatures of the original paintings. I am excited about this new version as they now have an official "plaque" on the back, yay! It includes my name (logo), website and title of each piece. A work in progress....

A while back I posted some photos of my progress on this painting (click here to see its earlier stages). Then I went oversees, and now that I am back I am trying to finish it ( I will definitely finish it). The pencil work is almost done and then I can get to painting! I can't wait. That's when the whole image will come together in terms of composition, color, and atmosphere. Yay!

Last week I took part in the Queens Art Express, which is a four day all-out art festival along the 7, N, Q, and R trains in Queens. There were art exhibits, performances, etc, etc... very cool stuff going on.

I sold the original painting "POPO", which is totally inspired the pure joy of bike riding.

According to the urban dictionary, the word "popo" means a police officer, especially ones that rides bikes. The origin comes California from the late 80's, and the police would ride around certain beaches in groups of two. (Ironically I did not know this detail as I was making the painting), but I definitely take it upon myself to patrol the "hood" on my bike! Ha! This is the only painting where I used myself as the model form head to toe. Each of the flowers has a symbolic meaning that relates to happiness and good memories. And yes, that is a bunny drinking a red bull, with Smurfette and an Austrian helmet. Here are some detail views:

After I got off the plane, coming back from my long awaited Euro trip to Poland, I went to set up yet another installation of the Contrast Art Show that took place at 320 Studios (well actually I stopped at the beach first). The Studios are owned by John Stavros, and the awesome art shows are curated by Jack Davletshin. "Contrast is an art exhibition which puts together a variation of artists, artistic movement groups, and several upcoming galleries; in a frivolous attempt to show the rising styles and trends of art in New York City".
Along with the visual art, there were live performances including body painting by Valerie Vanone and Trace Von Becker, as well as a live painting session by Chelsea Greene Lewyta, an aerialist performance by Catherine Herrmann
and a dancing light performance presented by Catherine Galasso.

the transplanted project: myth be told

The Transplanted Project presents: "Myth Be Told", an exploration of Caribbean folklore and mythology. Visual artists explore the rich history of the Caribbean, reinterpreting, re-imagining, and in some cases flipping the myth on its ear.

This is my painting of "Mami Wata" the African water goddess. I portrayed her as the face of Trinidad and Tobago, utilizing the country's coat of arms as the backdrop.

I'd like to let you all now about a really good art show going on the Lower East Side, NYC of a dear colleague of mine. Christina Ernst is a painter and sculptor, with a BFA from Cooper Union. Her work is an expression of feelings and opinions on the situations in the world today. She portrays the stories of our time through paint, mixing figurative with the abstract. This juxtaposition represents the dichotomy between the inner and outside world. Texture is important to Chris in her paintings, as it gives them a sculptural quality. She creates texture with the use of oil paint, charcoal, and a mix of natural, found materials such as sand, bark, etc. Her colors are subtle earth tones, glazed and layered creating a multi-faceted vibrancy.

The UnKnown Art Show that took place at the Hudson Hotel was awesome! Good Units, the event space at the hotel is a great and big venue. There was a lot of really impressive art, along with a full on dj set playing dubstep, two levels of art, many guests, and just a good time. I took a bunch of photos, although I wish I took more, and got around to meeting all the artists. Below are some of the pics of my set, as well as other people's work.

A compound of art, design, performance, and architectural technology, UnKNOWN will set the stage for a cultural exchange of new themes and ideas revolving around New York City's creative community. Alluding to the participants‟ creative origins, the title of the show is based on the idea that it doesn't matter who you are, rather what you bring to the table. Whether an artist is known or „unknown‟ in the New York City art community, their talent should speak for itself. Occupying two levels and 6,000 feet2, UnKNOWN will feature new works by over 30 artists, ranging from painting and photography to live art and cutting-edge design.

All works of art will be for sale and a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the organization TEAM in Africa. TEAM is an international social justice program run by the students at TEAM Academy in Newark, New Jersey. Students learn about critical issues regarding international education and world poverty through partnerships with schools in Kenya and Rwanda. After establishing connections with these indigenous communities, TEAM organizes efforts to raise funds and awareness of the cause. In 2007, after watching a video about the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa, a group of eighth grade students asked their teacher the simple question, “Why can‟t we do the same thing?” Since then, over 100 students from TEAM‟s middle and high schools, as well as their affiliated chapter at Indiana University, have worked towards enriching the lives of their partners abroad through a number of self-initiated projects. TEAM Academy is a non-profit organization that thrives fully on the support from volunteers. Any contributions they receive go directly to benefit the children.

I LOOOOVE COLOR. It's just so...juicy!

I've been more and more inspired by color recently (than in the past), with colors that pop, glow, unique color combinations, and so on. I have also been experimenting more with color in my artwork, and that's a plus too. It's not like the art will look any different, as it will still hold true to my sensibilities, but instead there will simply be more color to go around!

I took some time off from my new painting "the republic" to make more decoupage prints on hand-cut wood for my All Out Print Show. The prints are doing really good and I have to keep making more (and that's definitely good).

So the 3rd installation of the Contrast Art Show over this past weekend was awesome. I think this was the best outcome yet. There were many great guests, artists, and I could go on. The live body painting proved to be extra interesting this time around as well, but in order to keep this blog "safe" I will not post any pics of the daring activities...

I've started working on a new painting prior to finishing my last. Starting a brand new (big) project sometimes seems slightly overwhelming at first (before you get into the speedy flow of things), so this time around I just went for it. Time management is a beautiful thing!

Additionally, The Contrast Art Show will present a live body painting performance, as well as a show in “painting as a study of ambidexterity” presented by Richmond transplant, Roman Zelgatas, adding to the kick off for the show."

This is the work in progress for my newest coat of arms piece. I am part of a group project called The Transplanted Project, which is a visual celebration of the West Indies culture here in New York City. There are a various visual artists involved in this project, each creating work based on a theme with a West Indian twist. My particular tale is of Mami Wata, the African water goddess, and she will be incorporated into the Trinidad and Tobago coat of arms. The project blog has regular updates of the contributors' art in progress. Very cool.

Welcome 2011!
This piece is done! It went through various color transformations through its colored pencils and oil paint life, diverting from the initially anticipated color scheme. The experimenting was completely worth it, as it added new hues and tone variations to my existing color palette. I am very satisfied with the final result.

This one was inspired by my friend's coat of arms granted to his family in Lyon, France in 1556.
The heraldic seahorse symbolizes the power of water, and is an emblem of safe travel, particularly by sea. The lion traditionally symbolizes bravery, valor, strength and royalty.

Our Ceres Gallery opening was absolutely amazing! The December group art show in Chelsea, NYC was a great finish to my 2010 exhibition schedule. Here is the flood of photos:

I put in three oil paintings, all done on hand cut wood. The shape of each painting directly relates to its theme. A bicycle sprocket supports "popo", a narrative with two mountain bikes taken on a joy ride. A heraldic shield is the template for "bull", a coat of arms interpretation. A circle encompasses the "ambassador of desert warfare", enhancing the feeling of a radiating hot sun.

I just recently sold the original oil painting "Dolls and Balls" !! This piece was the last piece painted in my surf series. It is by far one of people's favorites from that collection, so its only natural that she has found herself a new home. I am very happy and excited. A big 'thank you' and 'congratulations' to the painting's new owner (a very cool lady by the way).

It is a humbling experience when someone connects with your personal art on a philosophical, aesthetic, and an emotional level. You get this mutual understanding and contentedness. I like it!

So I made 40 miniature fishboards. They are 9 inch replicas of my 8 original fish series paintings. Here are some pics of the process.

I have this thing with sketchbooks. They start out clean, methodical, and along with the pages they soon graduate to an organized chaos, followed by a sea of white. I have never reached the end of a sketchbook. Their expiration dates are overrated.
So these sketches above are a glimpse into my next piece. until then.
